Unbelievably relatable. I can tell we are related by this statement: “I’ll take changing a diaper over fixing a snack any day. I can handle owies but whining makes me want to pull my hair out. The dysregulation following screen time makes me avoid screens entirely.” I’m completely with you on that. Very helpful to help me think about what causes my burnout and how that can be avoided as much as possible. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this article and for acknowledging out loud what I have thought for years; parenting in America is abnormally hard. It is unrelenting and there is simply too much pressure on parents for too many things. As the working mother of 17, 11 and 6 yr old kids, I say this despite having a supportive life partner and even hired help and kids who are in some stages of self sufficiency also.
There is only so much one can outsource, and the mental load never lets up. We are stretched so thin with the ‘tasks’ of parenthood; the pick-up and drops/play dates/school emails/homework/extra curriculars etc that I often wonder if enough attention is being given to the nurturing of our children; are we actually ‘raising’ them?

It’s a genetic predisposition 😂

It really is, and that’s a very profound question you raise at the end.
